What the work actually is
Warehouse and general labour covers a wide range, and the posting will say which. In practice our clients ask for one of these:
- General labourLoading, unloading, sorting, cleaning down, event setup. No ticket needed. This is the usual way in.
- ForkliftCounterbalance, reach or walkie. Better paid, and the step most people take next.
- Shift supervisionRunning a crew, hitting the numbers, handling the paperwork. Usually someone who came up off the floor.
Starting without experience
General labour is one of the few roles where a blank CV is not a problem. What our clients actually screen for is whether you will turn up, on time, for the shift you agreed to. Say yes to a shift and work it, and the next call comes faster.
The practical requirements are short: CSA-approved safety boots (green triangle) are needed on almost every site, you need to get yourself there for the start of the shift, and you need to be legally entitled to work in Canada. Our application asks about all three so nobody turns up to a site they cannot be signed on to.
If you want to move up, the forklift ticket is the single most useful thing to get. It is worth roughly three to four dollars an hour on our current board, and it opens most of the warehouse roles we fill.
Shifts
Warehouse and distribution work runs around the clock. Days, afternoons and nights are all in play, and some sites run a straight weekend shift. The application asks which you can work, and it is worth being honest: a candidate who can take afternoons or nights is placeable much faster than one who can only do days, because days are what everyone asks for.
Pay on the openings above
Warehouse and general labour roles currently on our board pay $18 to $27 per hour. General labour sits at the bottom of that band, forklift in the middle, shift supervision at the top. Each posting carries its own range, because rates move with the client, the shift and the equipment. Ontario requires a pay range on public job postings, so what you see on the posting is what the role pays.
Where we are hiring
Current warehouse and general labour openings sit in Mississauga, Vaughan, Scarborough, King City, Kitchener and Waterloo, Montreal, Vaudreuil-Dorion and Calgary, plus Ontario-wide roles. Our warehouse work is concentrated along the 401 and 407 corridors in the GTA and Peel Region, in the Waterloo Region manufacturing belt, and in the industrial parks west of Montreal.
New roles come in weekly and the list above updates itself, so it is worth checking back or setting up job alerts.
What happens after you apply
- You submit the application on the posting, including your CV and the short screening questions about shift availability, safety boots and forklift experience.
- A recruiter reviews it against the roles we are filling.
- If there is a fit, we call you to confirm the details and walk you through the site, the shift and the pay before anything is booked.
